Hi Gigi, I don’t know too much about this specific site, but throughout history churches have become mosques and mosques have become churches. It’s interesting that you mention this on this post because this is something Jane Harrison says of the Greek religion. She argues that what we recognise as Greek mythology came from the north and was superimposed on another ‘order of worship’. She uses a geological metaphor, calling it ‘theological stratification’. This is what happens when sites of worship change denomination — even when the actual building has been torn down, they tend to build again on the same spot. I believe we do this because, at some level, like Rene Guénon, we recognise the holiness of all religions (despite their different exteriors).
